| “Something
for Something” Love Campaign
Early in 2005, Y.E.A.H worked with young people around Uganda
and other key stakeholders in adolescent sexual and reproductive
health to determine the most useful focus of a communication
campaign. Formative research and strategy design workshops
with young people determined that transactional sex, or engaging
in sexual relationships in exchange for favors or material
goods, poses a common and significant risk to young people
in Uganda. After consulting young people, Y.E.A.H. termed
these relationships “Something for Something Love”
and designated it as the main theme of the first Y.E.A.H campaign.
Y.E.A.H has made significant progress stimulating dialogue
and action around Something for Something Love on a variety
of levels using RockPoint 256 and reinforcing media materials,
as well as community outreach activities. As a result, political
and cultural leaders in Uganda spoke out about the harmful
effects of Something for Something Love on young people and
their health. Media coverage of Something for Something Love
has not only increased but also become more critical of the
practice. Y.E.A.H RLOs and YAGs organized a variety of community
outreach activities.
In 2006, Y.E.A.H. organized a national Journalism Contest
in partnership with the New Vision, the Daily Monitor, and
the Weekly Observer newspapers. The contest, which was publicized
through Rock Point 256 radio drama, flyers, newspaper advertisements,
and radio announcements, invited young people to write articles
about their experiences with something for something love.
More than 1800 young people entered the contest. Entries were
screened by members of the National YAG and Y.E.A.H., who
selected the best 20 articles. A team of journalists from
the three media houses judged the 20 finalists and selected
six winners. Y.E.A.H. brought all six winners to Kampala for
a high profile awards ceremony, presided over by the Minister
of State for Youth Affairs. Winners received generous prizes
ranging from schools fees to mobile phones and radios in addition
to Rock Point 256 promotional materials.
